The most common forms of skin cancer are:

Basal Cell Carcinoma

Squamous cell carcinoma

There are also many different types of less common skin cancers.  Skin cancer can be caused by numerous different factors but the most common risks include ultraviolet radiation (from sunlight or tanning beds), the effects of ageing, smoking, suppression of the immune system, exposure to certain chemicals or ionising radiation, long standing skin diseases and long standing wounds or scars.
